Mercenaries are an excellent way to experiment with builds you might be wanting to try or to fix issues with your party you might be having. Personally I love them. The base companions have good storytelling, but mercs are great for fighting. Optimized Mercs are mechanically superior to most of the companions.So, they said in one of their patches that they added the ability to respecialize your characters.
